Cabo Verde – 9 inhabited ilhas scattered across Atlantic Ocean like colored buttons on a tailor’s table – one so different from the other.

Cabo Verde is a diverse mix of colors, flavors, sounds and ideas that is reflected in every aspect of its culture. It is no different for fashion. With specific characteristic unique to each island, it is a place where the past mixes with the future, the local mingles with outside influences. Traveling around the archipelago at almost the same time we can see styles straight from the streets of New York or Amsterdam, as well as traditional costumes, as if time frozen a few decades ago. It is a place where ships with bidons filled with clothes sent from the USA or Portugal reach its ports daily, market stalls are flooded with colorful fabrics from continental Africa, in stylish boutiques one can buy clothes from European or American chain stores at inflated prices, and made in China clothing is available at numerous Chinese owned stores. At the same time, somewhere in the tiny workshop a tailor sews dresses and traditional pano di terra is being waved, both disappearing silently. By creating Fashion Revolution Cabo Verde, we aim to promote what is local – ideas, culture and, as far as possible, materials in the spirit of promoting responsible and environmentally friendly fashion.

Cabo Verde é uma mistura diversificada de cores, sabores, sons e idéias que se reflete em todos os aspectos de sua cultura. Na moda não seria diferente. Com características únicas para cada ilha, Cabo Verde é um lugar onde o passado se mistura com o futuro, onde o local (terra-terra) se mistura com o que é de fora. Viajando pelo arquipélago podemos ver estilos vindos diretamente das ruas de Nova York ou Amsterdão, como trajes tipicamente tradicionais, como se o tempo estivesse congelado algumas décadas atrás. É um lugar onde navios com bidons cheios de roupas enviadas dos EUA ou Portugal chegam diariamente aos nossos portos, barracas de mercado são inundadas com tecidos coloridos da África continental; em boutiques elegantes, é possível comprar roupas de chain-stores européias ou americanas a preços inflacionados, e roupas confeccionadas na China estão disponíveis em várias lojas chinesas. Ao mesmo tempo, em algum lugar, numa pequena oficina se costura  vestidos e trajes desenhados, ou mesmo o nosso pano da terra pede estar a ser teado, no entanto, ambos desaparecendo silenciosamente. Ao criar a Fashion Revolution Cabo Verde, pretendemos promover o que é local – ideias, cultura e, na medida que é possível, materiais com o espírito de promover uma moda responsável e ecológica.
