Why do we need to talk about textile waste in Salvador?

Abadás — the iconic shirts worn during Carnival — are mostly made of polyester and typically used only once.

In addition to leftover fabric scraps from production and customization, they are usually discarded after Carnival.

Polyester is a petroleum-based fiber that takes 200 to 400 years to decompose and releases microplastics both during production and when worn.

This is a collective issue — and together, we’ll explore possible futures to reduce our impact and regenerate nature, all without losing the cultural value of the country’s biggest celebration.
