Polyester and other synthetic fabrics have become ubiquitous in our closets, making up about 70% of clothes produced today. Unfortunately, they are also a major source of microplastics and require toxic dyes. The UN has even identified textiles as a priority sector in their work on plastic pollution.
To limit global heating to 1.5°C, the world must phase out oil and gas extraction – which also means no more synthetic clothing. As the 4th largest producer of crude oil and 11th largest emitter of greenhouse gases per capita, Canada plays a critical role in driving this change.
Beyond Plastic Fashion encourages citizens to advocate for their own health and the viability of our planet by demanding that brands transition away from plastic fashion.
